Pop icon Beyoncé is reportedly in advanced talks to distribute a concert film of her smash Renaissance World Tour in partnership with AMC Theatres.
Sources tell Variety that Beyoncé’s team at CAA held discussions with major studios and streamers about bidding on a film project she’s long had in the works. It would include footage from her 2023 Renaissance concerts along with a documentary-style behind-the-scenes look.
The film is eyeing a wide December 1st release per sources, on the heels of Beyoncé wrapping up her tour expected to gross nearly $560 million.
The deal would mirror Taylor Swift’s recent pact with AMC for her Eras Tour movie, where she financed the film herself and will earn over 50% of box office receipts. Beyoncé is said to be getting the same favorable terms.
Swift’s AMC film tracking estimates predict a $100+ million opening weekend. Beyoncé’s box office haul could be comparable given her immense global fanbase, the Beyhive.
Going direct to theaters cuts studios out of the equation, marking a shift in distribution models. It hands more power and profits to artists.
Details surrounding Beyoncé’s film are tightly guarded. But she reportedly finished filming accompanying music videos for Renaissance nearly a year ago, though none have emerged.
Streaming could be a question mark as Netflix signed Beyoncé to a multi-project deal after her 2018 Coachella film Homecoming. She may have obligations there still unclear.
But Beyoncé is not one to be dictated to by studios or streamers. If the AMC talks pan out, she will buck industry norms once again.
The Renaissance concert movie would give the Beyhive an all-access experience with her history-making show and album. As a crowning live performance document, it promises box office domination.
Pairing with AMC following Swift’s pact displays the leverage elite music stars wield. With arena tours grossing hundreds of millions, they can self-distribute concert films at scale while maximizing profits.
Whether projected on the big screen or streamed into homes, the magic, artistry and power of Beyoncé’s work continues enlightening the world. A Renaissance tour movie would be another monumental marker of her unprecedented impact.
