Pop icon Taylor Swift has been named Time Magazine’s 2023 ‘Person of the Year,’ capping a record-breaking year for the singer-songwriter.
Swift is the first artist to receive the honor for her achievements in entertainment. The 33-year-old has shattered records this year with her global ‘Eras’ stadium tour, which is on pace to become the highest-grossing tour in history according to Billboard.
The tour has grossed about $900 million in 2023 alone and has bolstered local economies in every city it has visited. Ticket demand has been unprecedented, with resale prices reaching as high as $28,000 and spurring federal investigations into online sales practices.
“This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been,” Swift told Time in an interview.
On top of touring, Swift was 2023’s most-streamed artist globally on Spotify, with over 26 billion streams. She also released a tour documentary film and inspired renewed interest in NFL games by attending Kansas City Chiefs matches to support boyfriend Travis Kelce.
For these entertainment achievements, as well as her business savvy and continuing influence, Time has bestowed Swift with the 2023 ‘Person of the Year’ designation. She beat out world leaders like Volodymyr Zelensky and Kamala Harris, who were runners-up for the annual recognition.
