Taylor Swift fans were treated to an exciting sneak peek this week, as her re-recorded 2017 song “Look What You Made Me Do” debuted in a teaser for the new Amazon Prime thriller series “Wilderness.”
The defiant anthem can be heard underscoring the opening credits for the upcoming show. This marks the first time Swift has unveiled a re-recording from her blockbuster “Reputation” album.
In a press release, Amazon stated that “”Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” reflects the transformation of main character Liv, played by Jenna Coleman, after her idyllic marriage crumbles.”
Liv embarks on a tense American road trip with her cheating husband Will, portrayed by Oliver Jackson-Cohen. What begins as a quest for reconciliation quickly turns into Liv’s plot for revenge, as the wronged wife embraces her fury. The gritty, unforgiving tone of “Look What You Made Me Do” sums up her mindset shift perfectly.
Beyond the thematic relevance, Swift’s presence adds major star power to “Wilderness.” The psychological thriller also stars Ashley Benson of “Pretty Little Liars” fame and Eric Balfour of “24.” It centers on Liv and Will’s attempt to repair their relationship on a trip through iconic destinations like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. But Liv secretly plans to stage deadly “accidents” along the way.
Swift has been hard at work re-recording her first six albums since 2019, when her masters were acquired by Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in a controversial $300 million deal. By creating new versions of her old material, the singer-songwriter can regain ownership over these songs.
Last year saw the release of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” and “Red (Taylor’s Version),” containing re-recorded tracks from those two records. At her recent Los Angeles concert, Swift revealed that “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” will drop on October 27.
Hearing “Look What You Made Me Do” kick off the “Wilderness” teaser hints that the rest of the “Reputation” re-recordings can’t be far behind. Swift called it her “most FAVORITE re-record” so far, likely because five “From the Vault” bonus tracks will also be included.
For Swift and her legions of fans, the chance to revisit “Reputation” on the singer’s own terms is priceless. The album and its unapologetic, fiery singles like “Look What You Made Me Do” represented a bold shift to a edgier era for Swift.
Now the era has come full circle thanks to this high-profile sync in “Wilderness.” Swift’s music underscores the show’s themes of betrayal, empowerment and revenge perfectly. When “Wilderness” premieres September 15, listeners will get to hear “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in all its defiant glory.
